Places to visit when your family visits you in London

Ideal month: September

This post is specially for people living in London who are frequently visited by their family from all over the world. When we host our guests, it is a big challenge and a great responsibility to make them  feel comfortable and see to it that they get the bang for their buck in their trip. Here is a small list of places for a month's tour.

Seven Sisters Cliff:

You can visit the Seven Sisters Sussex by booking your train to Brighton. If you want to drive, you can rent your car but please check the parking charges. We rent cars with Green motion cars, Edgware. We liked the service and the vehicle. You can spend half of your day in Brighton. We included Palace Pier in Brighton tour. From Brighton, we made our way straight to the bus stop. You can take 12, 12A or 13 x from Churchill Square. The bus takes around 1 hour to the walking route. The Seven Sisters Country Park is made up of 280 hectares of chalk cliffs, meandering river valley and open chalk grassland. We hiked from the visitor centre to Birling Gap which is a 4 miles hike up and down on the cliffs.

Leeds castle:

Visit the website to get ideas of how you can explore the place. You can buy tickets when you arrive. We booked our train to Bearsted station from London. From the station, there is a shuttle facility to the castle for £5 each. With kids, the trip can be fun to explore the place. Visit the falconry, wildlife and the garden around the castle.

Cambridge:

Book The Greater Anglia train from Liverpool street station, London to Cambridge station. One of the beautiful places in England with the best of the universities of UK. I recommend going for a free walking tour by Footprints. It is better to have the walking tour to get an idea about the places and know the history of the place. Register online or you can join them from the location where they start their tour. There are daily tours. Please check if the universities are open for visits before the trip. Better to visit the place on Saturdays so that you don't miss anything if closed on Sundays. The places we covered are:

  • Mathematical Bridge
  • Bridge of Sighs
  • River Cam
  • The King's college
  • Fitzwilliam Museum
  • Go for Punting
  • Botanic Garden

Lulworth Cove and Durdle door:

Lulworth Cove

Durdle Door

A road trip to Durdle door. We booked one night stay at Bournemouth at Hotel Fairmount. As most of us were vegetarians, we had packed some parathas and sandwiches with us along with dry Indian snacks. We visited Old Harry rocks the day we reached Bournemouth. The promenade walk can be refreshing in late evening. If you are an animal lover, spend some time feeding peanuts to local squirrels in parks. From Bournemouth, you can do Lulworth Cove and Durdle door next day. Step out of your car and walk around the countryside roads with beautiful houses. You need to follow the maps and look for the parking areas at each point. At every point you have to walk to the cliffs. Wheelchair can't be possible as they are either rocky or steep.
